PURPOSE:To improve image reproduction quality by surrounding, with volatile gas, the surface of the substance containing water glass as a binding agent so as to isolate it form outside air, thereby preventing the substance surface from coming into direct contact with outside air after heat treatment. CONSTITUTION:Dicyclohexyl ammonium Nitrite contained in a container 82 is vaporized when a shadow mask 4 and a panel 1 are transferred from the heat treatment process to the next process via a hanger 8. Then, the vaporized gas is discharged from hole 83 to fill the panel 1 with the vaporized gas so as to prevent the surfaces of a heavy metal coating 42 and a phosphor from coming into contact with outside air, and prevent melting of water glass dehydrated with heat treatment to maintain the specified shape. By this method, melting of the substance surface, which is caused by contact between moisture content and carbon dioxide gas in the air and the conductive substance, is prevented.
