PURPOSE:To make it possible to sufficiently accelerate a vehicle, by holding the present gear stage in a step gear transmission when the step gear transmission is set at the first gear stage and an accelerator manipulating degree and an accelerator manipulating speed exceeds predetermined values. CONSTITUTION:Signals from an accelerator sensor 32 provided to an accelerator sensor 30 and neutral detecting switches 43-45 provided to a step gear transmission 14 are delivered to a control unit 16, the step gear transmission 14 is held at the present gear stage when the step gear transmission 14 is at the first gear stage while an accelerator manipulating degree and an accelerator manipulating speed exceed predetermined values. With this arrangement, during starting on an ascending slope and so forth, since the first gear may be held even at such a vehicle speed that gear shift has been conventionally made, it is possible to obtain sufficient acceleration.
