PURPOSE:To improve operability of calculation with a compiling device for character strings by using a designating means for the number of repetitive rows and columns to be calculated. CONSTITUTION:The character strings to be compiled are stored in a character string storing memory 3. A numeric character string extracting part 9 extracts a numeric character string to be calculated out of the memory 3 based on the information on the start row, the end row and the number of repetitive skips which are held by a start row register 5, an end row register 6 and a repetitive skip counting register 7 respectively. A character string/numerical value conversion processing part 10 receives the numeric character string extracted by the part 9 and converts it into the numerical value. This numerical information is calculated by an addition processing part 11 and stored in a memory register 12. The numerical information stored in the memory 12 is converted into a numeric character string by a numerical value/character string conversion processing part 13 and stored in the memory 3 via a character string writing part 14.
