PURPOSE:To read data on any surface by providing a transmission window on the upper surface of an enclosure in which a photoelectric conversion part for detecting the brightness and the darkness of light is housed and placing a reflecting surface for reflecting the light from the light emitting part transmitted through the transmission window on the transmission window on the upper space of the transmission window. CONSTITUTION:Scanning lines 7-10 are radiated upward in multidirections from the light emitting part. For instance, the scanning line 9 radiated upward from the transmission window 2 is diffused and reflected on a mirror 5 and further diffused on a mirror 6 and reflected to the transmission window 2. As for other scanning lines, they are reflected on the mirror 5 or 6 according to a scanning angle and the directions of the light are various. Accordingly, at the time of reading the bar code of goods 11, even when the bar code is oriented to any direction, the light irradiates the bar code and the reflected light of the bar code can be reflected to the photoelectric conversion part by one or both the mirrors 5, 6. Thereby, the data of the goods 11 can be effectively read.
