PURPOSE:To prevent fluidization of a supporting electrolytic gel even if an electrochromic display element is damaged so that the gel cannot be leaked and scattered to the outside, by using the aqueous supporting electrolytic gel as the supporting electrolyte which performs anion exchange with an electrochromic layer during the operation. CONSTITUTION:This electrochromic display element (ECD) is composed of an operating electrode 2, opposite electrode 3 facing to the operating electrode 2, thin-film electrochromic (EC) layer 4 composed of polyaniline formed by performing electrolytic oxidation polymerization of aniline monomer to at least one side of facing surfaces between both of the electrodes 2 and 3, and a supporting electrolytic gel 8 which is <=1 in pH and >=10wt% in moisture content and formed in the EC layer 4 or between the EC layer 4 and the opposite surface facing the EC layer 4. The viscosity of this supporting electrolytic gel 8 is set at >=1,000 poise, with which the gel 8 is not fluidized at the temperature of operating time. Since the gel 8 is not fluidized, an injection port 7 which is formed in a spacer 5 in conventional ones becomes unnecessary and, therefore, the supporting electrolytic gel 8 is not leaked and scattered to the outside even if this ECD is damaged.
