The tool charger has a tool exchange arm formed with tool holders on both ends. An arm support has an arm driving mechanism for rotating the tool exchange arm and reciprocating it toward and away from a shaft provided for the arm support. A carriage swingably supports the arm support about the shaft. The carriage moves between the tool magazine and the spindle along guide rails. An arm swinging drive has a pin on a back surface of the arm support. An oil pressure cylinder is mounted on the tool magazine and including a piston rod, and a hook mounted on an outer end of the piston rod for removably engaging the pin.
