PURPOSE:To prevent the problem to find later that a record is removed by confirming the normality of the backward action of one record by the re-trial processing of the writing action of a magnetic tape controller. CONSTITUTION:The presence and absence of a writing action error are checked by a writing action error detecting means 11. At the time of the presence/ absence of an error, a traveling distance from the starting of a writing action to the completion of the action is measured by a first traveling distance measuring means 12 and measured data are registered at a storing area A. The traveling distance from the starting of the action when the backward action of one record is executed to the completion is measured by a second traveling distance measuring means 13 and the measuring result is registered into a storing area B. Thereafter, a differential confirming means 14 compares whether or the difference of areas A and B is in the allowable value. When the difference is not in the allowable value, it is judged that positioning is unfair, and a reporting means 15 reports it to a host device.
