PURPOSE:To stably and surely prevent flicker from being generated, by sweeping out video signal charge accumulated until then at a time preceding by Ta seconds that is a value integer times the flashing cycle of an illumination source nearer than the time when the video signal charge is rend out from the photoelectric converter of a CCD type or MOS type solid-state image pickup element. CONSTITUTION:The video signal charge read out from the photoelectric transducer at an arbitrary time (t) is the charge photoelectically converted and accumulated in a time from a time (t-Ta) to the time (t), and it is proportional to the integrated value of the light quantity of a light source during the above time. An electrode sweeping circuit 13 sweeps the charge accumulated in the same photodiode before Ta seconds that is the time to read out the accumulated charge in the photodiode by a signal readout circuit 12, and arranges the initial charge of the photodiode at a constant value, thereby, in other words, it resets the photodiode. The timing of sweeping is controlled by a sweeping control circuit 3. Thus, since it is possible to suppress the generation of the flicker by the image pickup element itself, the flicker can be suppressed stably and surely.
