PURPOSE:To improve the reliability of the read data by checking an error correcting code via the ECC circuit of a selected memory unit and confirming via the ECC circuit of another non-selected unit that the memory unit outputs the prescribed value in a non-selection mode. CONSTITUTION:The syndrome producers 20-23 are added to the memory units 10-13 and the producers 20-23 of the selected units 10-13 check the ECC (error correcting code). While the producers 20-23 of all other non-selected units 10-13 decide that all units 10-13 output the prescribed value, e.g., '0' in a non-selection mode.
