PURPOSE:To obtain a reader with the ease of shading correction, a simple constitution and the ease of handling by providing a light emitting diode and a photodetector in parallel with front and rear sides of a transparent flat base. CONSTITUTION:A wire 11 made of aluminum or like is provided on the front face of the transparent flat base 1 and a transparent electrode 12 such as an ITO is provided on the rear face. Monolithic light emitting diodes made of a light absorbing crystal provided on the front face of the base 1 arranged in a line are arranged with the joint margin of 1/100 or below the length then the diodes are regarded substantially as a linear light source. In arranging the diodes 2 so as to be opposed to the lighting face of an original or the like, the light is not directly arrived at the base 1 because of the monolithic type, only the reflected light is transmitted through the base 1 and reaches a photodetector 3. Since the face of the base 1 is intersected orthogonally with the optical path, the fogged image is not caused in terms of principles.
