PURPOSE:To obtain a high-output compressed pulse by making a positive chirp pulse to a degenerative four-wave mixing medium incident on a single mode optical fiber as a negative chirp pulse. CONSTITUTION:A light pulse from a light pulse generator 1 is passed through a single mode optical fiber 2 for an incident wave to obtain a positive chirp pulse, which is made incident on the degenerating four-wave mixed medium 4. The degenerative four-wave mixing medium 4 converts the positive input chirp pulse into the negative chirp pulse, which is reflected. Then this output is reflected by a half-mirror 5 to enter a single mode optical fiber 2B for a reflected wave and the pulse is compressed here. Then, the degree of compression of the negative chirp pulse depends upon the inclination of a chirp, but compression to about 1/10 is normally possible. Thus, degenerative four-wave mixing is used to generate the inverted chirp pulse, which can be compressed with high efficiency by single mode normal dispersion.
