PURPOSE:To make confirmation of an inputted key word possible even when an information file device is in a communication operating state, by discriminating the communication operating state by means of a communicating state discriminating section and changing the displaying state of the key word in accordance with the discriminated results. CONSTITUTION:When this information file device alone operates, the character information of a key word is displayed on a CRT display 4. On the other hand, if registration and retrieval of picture information are carried out when the device is in a communicating state, a system control circuit 13 is set to a communication operating state and the communication flag of a state discriminating section 20 is set. When the registration of picture information is carried out in this state, the control circuit 13 is further set to a registering state after the picture information read and formed by a scanner 1 is recorded in a picture memory 2. Since the communication flag of the discriminating section 20 is set, a key-word display control section 11 causes a display memory 3 to store a matrix-like graph corresponding to the array of the input keys of a multiple- item input device 7 and a display 4 to display the graph.
