A tool assembly (100) including both a grinding tool (300) and a thimble screw alignment plate (649) facilitate the removal and reinstallation of the bottom nozzle (119) of a nuclear fuel assembly (110) under water. The grinding tool (300) includes a base plate (301), a grinding motor (303), a grinding head, a housing (304) for isolating the grinding motor from ambient water, and both a guide mechanism (307) and linear drive for guiding and pushing the grinding head into abrasive contact with a screw-obstructing portion of a bottom nozzle. The tool assembly greatly expedites the removal of bottom nozzles whose feet (130) include flanges (131) or gussets that obstruct access to one or more of the thimble screws that connect the bottom nozzle (119) to the support skeleton (112) of the fuel assembly (110). |
