PURPOSE:To generate complete linear picture information even with intermittent scanning by providing a buffer memory storing by special line number of linear image data from a linear solid-state image pickup element. CONSTITUTION:A sensor section 2 is provided with buffer registers BR1, 2. A line buffer group 5 has a line number corresponding to a distance D between both lines L1 and L2 of the sensor section 2, in this case, 16 lines, for example, being a multiple of 4 lines. When a difference between a value WP of a write pointer of the buffer 5 and a read pointer RP is 15 or over, a control section 1 reverses a motor M to reverse the original or the sensor section 2 by 4 lines or over and then stops. The advancing idle read processing is applied when both the pointers are approached again. In this case, 4 lines reversed by movement/stop are forwarded at restart, the sensor section 2 is advanced by 4 lines to the original while throwing away the data by 4 lines and the data of the 5th and succeeding lines relating to the image information obtained so far are obtained. A combined image sensor arranged with short image pickup elements in zigzag is used and the intermittent processing is attained.
