PURPOSE:To enable shockless switching to be attained, by changing a capacity of transmission torque of a starting clutch in accordance with a rotary speed difference or speed ratio before and after the clutch when a transmission is switched to its continuously variable driving from directly coupled driving. CONSTITUTION:Signals from an engine speed sensor 164, car speed sensor 165, driven shaft speed sensor 166, shift position sensor 167 and a throttle opening sensor 168 are input to a controller 160, and when a transmission is switched from its directly coupled driving to continuously variable driving, the controller 160, which duty controls a pulley controlling solenoid valve 161 to target speed change ratio and outputs duty ratio, corresponding to a speed difference between before and after a starting clutch 60, to a start controlling solenoid valve 162, turns off a direct coupling controlling solenoid valve 163. In this way, since a capacity of transmission torque of the starting clutch is controlled in accordance with a relative speed of the starting clutch, shockless switching can be always performed.
