PURPOSE:To form an electrostatic latent image having no image omission by using an original automatic type document handler, by varying an original free-running path length so that the original free-running path length becomes 1/n of the peripheral length of an electrostatic latent image holding body. CONSTITUTION:When an original is carried into an original automatic type document handler 18, an original size is detected. From a relation to a selected reduction magnification, one of path fingers 241-244 is transferred to a second position and a carrying path is blocked, and also, the home position of a movable return part unit 38 is calculated by a computing element 16. By a signal from the computing element 16, a reversible motor is brought to a forward turn or a reverse turn, and the unit 38 is set to the home position. As a result, the original free-running path length of the handler 18 is determined. In this way, when the original free-running path length is set, plural copies can be obtained without forming an image in a non-image forming part such as a seam or a void.
