Device for automatically controlling a hanging tool, of the washing brush type, for vehicles which can move along an axis XX', the brush 1 being suspended from a stationary gantry 4, located above the drive passage for the vehicle V; this device comprises means which react to a displacement of the centre of gravity of the moving equipment, in reaction to the forces which are exerted on the brush itself, when it is in the active cleaning position against the bodywork of the vehicle. These means comprise a moving carriage, supporting the brush, guided on a path which is inclined from the outside towards the inside of the driving passage, and perpendicular to the axis XX' of displacement of the vehicle on the said driving passage. The rotary brush 1 suspended from the carriage 2 can move with respect to this carriage along an axis ZZ' forming an angle of the order of 30 to 45 DEG with the axis XX'. A damping cylinder 8 is interposed between the carriage and the brush 1. The automatic control device applies also to the automatic guidance of various tools, such as drills, polishers etc. <IMAGE>
