PURPOSE:To enable display varied at high speed and to permit display of optionally varied pattern by constructing a liquid crystal display device constituted of a dot-matrix display type TN type liquid crystal cell and a segment display type TN type liquid crystal cell superposed on each other and interposed between a polarizer and an analyzer. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal display device 1 has a multilayered structure constituted of a TN type liquid crystal cell 2 and a TN type liquid crystal cell 3 interposed between a polarizer 4 and an analyzer 5. The TN type liquid crystal cell 2 comprises TN type liquid crystal 6, transparent electrodes 7, 8 and glass plates 9.10. Another TN type liquid crystal cell 3 comprises a TN type liquid crystal 11, transparent electrodes 12, 13, and glass plates 10, 14. The cell 2 is of a segment display type in which the electrodes 7, 8 are constructed in a form of segments having a specified pattern. On the other hand, the cell 3 is of a dot-matrix type comprising electrodes 12, 13 forming dot-matrix. By this constitution, tachometer display which is required to be varied at high speed and message display which is required to display free characters are both performed satisfactorily in the one screen.
