PURPOSE:To prepare a superior permselectivity by utilizing a gas permeable membrane wherein polyphenylene oxide having a sulfone radical as a substituent is crosslinked. CONSTITUTION:Poly(2,6-dimethylphenylene oxide) is prepared by carrying out oxidative coupling reaction of 2,6-dimethylphenol in the presence of CuCl- pyridine complex as catalyst, and CHCl3 solution of the same is reacted with chlorosulfonic acid, and then hydrolyzed to prepare a polymer having a repeating unit shown in the formula, wherein R1 and R2 are respectively independently H atom or sulfone, and the number of sulfone is 0.01 piece per unit or more. Such a polymer is crosslinked with amine-type organic compound or the like as a crosslinking agent to prepare a gas permeable membrane. Said gas permeable membrane has permselectivity suitable for separation of O2 from N2, CO2 from CH4 or the like.
