Method and apparatus for installing windows which avoids the need for man-handling windows up ladders or up scaffolding or through window openings from the inside, all of which as well as being potentially hazardous requires more than one person except for the smallest of windows, especially when pre-glazed. We provide a winch (29; 112) carried by a frame member (11; 100, 102) which is positioned internally of the window opening into which the window is to be fitted. The winch is coupled by a lifting line (31; 141) to a lifting harness (37; 130, 150) adapted to carry the window. The lifting line is passed through the window opening. Accordingly, operation of the winch allows the window to be lifted into the window opening from a position externally of the opening and below it. Attaching the lifting harness to the window glass by suckers (134, 136, 154, 156) allows glazed frames to be lifted into position. Advantageously the lifting harness provides adjustable abutments (158, 160) for the lifting line to assist in aligning the window with the opening. A pivotable guide arm (180) extending from the window opening and with which the lifting line cooperates further assists lifting and window fitting.
|
