Isobutyraldehyde is oxidized in presence of the following catalyst compound (I) by contacting with oxygen molecule in gas phase to produce methacrylic acid. In the fomula, of catalyst compound, M is K, Rb, Cs or Tl; M' is Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Nb, or Sb; X is the positive number satisfying valence condition of other element.
