A connecting element (20) for use between a ledger or transom (12), and a standard (11), in a scaffolding system, and including a hook shaped member (19) attached to the end of the ledger or transom, with a slot (21) being provided between the hook shaped member and the remainder of said connecting element and which receives a connecting eyelet (18) attached to the standard. A spring biased retractable pin (22, 25) is carried by the connecting element and is movable across the entrance to the slot and beneath the eyelet to prevent unintentional disengagement of the hook shaped member from said eyelet. The leading end of the retractable pin is tapered at (27) whereby, during connection to the eyelet, the engagement of the tapered end with the eyelet forces the pin to move to its retracted position against the action of the biasing spring (25) and whereby, after the engagement has passed, the pin extends back into the slot beneath the eyelet under the action of the biasing spring. The hook shaped member is tapered and at least part of the inside of the eyelet is similarly tapered to produce a wedging action. |
