A thread-allocating system for a sewing machine is provided with elongated thread-holding elements which are designed so that the thread, during its movement in the thread holder is free of a take-up element and is in frictional contact with the two elements. The two elements are designed and arranged in such a way that the thread in the thread holder can be drawn away from one of the elements by the take-up element, and consequently the frictional resistance on the thread by the holder is reduced during the movement of the take-up element into the stitch-making direction.
