A bath lifter (1) for ill and disabled patients for facilitating use of a bath tub (2) has a support surface in the form of a chair (25) or a couch fastened on a lifting column (7) for lifting and lowering. The lifting column (7) is fixed to a building wall (3) beside the bath tub (2) and is used as a guiding pipe for a carriage (19) which can be displaced within the lifting column (7). The carriage (19) is fastened via a shaft nut (20) to a trapezoidal shaft (14) extending axially in the lifting column (7) and driven by an electric motor. <IMAGE>
