Process for preparing hydrofluoric acid from fluorine- and chlorine-containing carbon compounds at elevated temperatures

Hydrofluoric acid, HCl and CO2 can be produced at elevated temperature in the gas phase from organic fluorine compounds which, in addition to fluorine, also contain chlorine. The organic fluorine compounds are admixed with at least sufficient water for all of the bound chlorine and fluorine to be formally convertible into HCl and HF, and with at least sufficient oxygen for the hydrogen not bound as HCl or HF to be convertible into H2O and all of the bound carbon to be convertible into CO2. The mixture is heated to temperatures at which the formation of HF takes place. The hydrofluoric acid generated is separated from the reaction mixture.
