A measuring tape having a tape strip (1) provided with a scale (graduation) (2) has a fitting (6), which is arranged at the start of said strip, and a pulling handle (12). The fitting (6) has a first stop (9) for internal measurement and a second stop (10) for external measurement. In order to be able to use the measuring tape in an equally favourable way for internal and external measurement, the scale (2), which starts with the zero mark (3) at the start of the tape strip (1), is arranged at the end of the fitting (6) on the side of the pulling handle and also in the plane (11) which is defined by the first stop (9) for internal measurement and extends at right angles to the tape strip (1). The second stop (10), which is intended for external measurement, is provided on the stop (6) in a second plane which extends at a distance parallel to the first plane. In the case of external measurement, the second stop (10) on the fitting (6) can be varied in the plane (11) extending at right angles to the zero mark (3) of the tape strip (1), for example can be rotated or displaced. <IMAGE>
