In the process described, alkaline salts of 1-hydroxynaphthalene are made to react with carbon dioxide in the presence of C6-C10 alcanols at temperatures of between 100 and 220 DEG C and if necessary the 1-hydroxynaphthalene-2-carboxylic acid and the alkaline salts of 1-hydroxynaphthalene-2-carboxylic acid are released by treatment with acid using the alkaline salt of 1-hydroxynaphthalene-2-carboxylic acid obtained.
