The pressing device has a press plate (4) which can be moved in a pressing casing (3) by means of cable lines (5, 6) which engage on the press plate (4) in opposite pulling directions and come to rest against a pulling cylinder (7) which is mounted on the pressing casing (3) so as to rotate about a shaft (14) which is arranged perpendicularly to the plane of the press plate (4). The press plate (4) is guided on the pressing casing (3) by means of lateral guiding bows which overlap the edges or penetrate the mutually opposing side walls (11, 12) of the pressing casing (3) and against which there come to rest on opposite sides of the pressing casing (3) in each case the pulling cables (5) which actuate the pressing process. Furthermore, the press plate (4) can be moved in stages in successive steps in the pressing direction (9) by means of partial rotations of the pulling cylinder (7) in the same direction in each case for compression of cams with relatively large axial lengths, a return device (36) which operates in a single stage and has a return catch (37) which only becomes active when the end position of the press plate (4) has been reached being present in order to return the press plate (4) to its initial position. <IMAGE>
