The apparatus comprises a walking drive mechanism 1 of two supporting carriages 4, 5. The supporting carriages 4, 5 are connected to one another by a pusher 6. A damping and/or length-compensation member 10-16 is provided at one end of the pusher 6. Each supporting carriage 4, 5 has a supporting travel mechanism 17 and a locking travel mechanism 18. These are rotatably mounted about vertical axes 20 in the carriage frame 19. A transversely pivotable locking tooth 29 is mounted in each locking travel mechanism 18. The locking tooth 29 can be engaged in recesses 28 on the underside of the travel rail 3 by means of a compression-spring arrangement and can be pushed out again by an unlocking cylinder 26. The locking tooth can also be vertically displaced. Furthermore, locking teeth can be engaged in the recesses 28 from both sides of the travel rail 3. <IMAGE>
