To avoid overloading in a multi-stage press owing to a workpiece transport system which leaves something to be desired, there is provided in the drive of the carriage (1) a device which becomes operational in the event of an overload. The connecting rod (4) which is moved by a crankshaft (3) is articulated by means of its drive-side crank pin (7) to the crank bracket (5) of a lever four-bar mechanism. The lever four-bar mechanism is also composed of a coupling bracket (8) and a link bracket (10). The bearing journals (6, 12) of the crank bracket (5) and the link bracket (10) are mounted on the carriage (1). The device, which becomes operational in the event of an overload, also has a pressure control device (14 to 18), which engages on the coupling bracket (8) and ensures that the latter does not execute a movement in the coupling plane during operation of the multi-stage press. <IMAGE>
