In an apparatus for the printing of labels in labelling machines, having a rotating stamp head and an inking roller (3) rotating synchronously with the latter, the printing ink is conveyed by an ink-conveying mechanism (46 to 50, 52) which is integrated in a plug-in ink fountain (2) and which is positively connected to the rotating inking roller (3) by means of couplable drive elements (11, 45). As a result of the positive connection between the inking roller (3) and ink-conveying mechanism (46 to 50, 52) in the preferably cartridge-like ink fountain (2), the ink supply always takes place as a function of the performance of the labelling unit accomplished at that particular moment. In the event of faults in the ink-conveying mechanism or in the event of a lack of ink, the ink cartridge (2) can be exchanged quickly and easily, without interruptions in operation. <IMAGE>
