The proposal is for a variable shock absorber (damper) which is used, for example, to damp the oscillations of a motor vehicle. The shock absorber comprises a piston rod (2) which is guided in a working cylinder (1) and is rigidly connected to a damping piston (4). To adjust the damping characteristic of the shock absorber, there is a bypass opening (36) in the shock absorber, and the size of this opening is determined by the relative position of a transverse hole (31) in the piston rod (2) and a control opening (34) in a control slide (20). The control slide (20) simultaneously acts as the armature of an electromagnetic adjusting device (10) which has two coil windings (13, 14) and a permanent magnet (16), and, when the coil windings (13, 14) are not excited, is held in a central position by springs (29). When the coil windings (13, 14) are excited, the control slide (20) is deflected from its normal position, thereby increasing or reducing the size of the bypass opening (36). According to the invention, when the coil windings (13, 14) are not excited the control slide (20) assumes a position in which the bypass opening (36) has a more or less medium size. <IMAGE>
