In the method, during mould filling in plastics injection moulding, a pressure signal and the position of the screw, acting as a plunger, are registered at certain intervals and passed on for evaluation. Here an optimisation of the machine setting is carried out, the pressure profile measured in the mould cavity or in the front cavity of the injection unit or in the hydraulic cylinder being brought to a linear increase from cycle to cycle. A further step ensures that the sum of pressure values recorded at certain intervals is minimised. By comparison of the variation in screw stroke, related to the variation in pressure, with a family of characteristics recorded with the injection unit closed, the amount of material transported from the injection unit into the mould is determined. As a result, the point in time and the screw position at which virtually no further mould filling takes place are determined.
