Catalysts comprise the opt. acid-washed and opt. doped, finely divided clay mineral component of ash from combustion of composite mixt. of finely divided coal and dry absorbent, esp. limestone flour. USE/ADVANTAGE - Ash from this combustion, esp. from coal with high clay content, can be utilised. The ash has the grain size of the coal used, has high specific surface, and absorbs considerably more water than ash from the usual melt and dry combustion processes. The finely divided clay mineral component of the ash used as catalyst and/or catalyst carrier, is claimed. The catalysts are esp. for hydrocarbon cracking, but can also be used as dehydration, condensation, isomerisation, and cyclisation catalysts, or as redox catalysts when the ash is pref. coated with metals.
