PURPOSE:To accurately measure slag level and to control the slag making under high accuracy in a converter by catching receiving force on a lance from foaming slag as strain of the lance itself. CONSTITUTION:As the foaming slag 30 gives the lance body 15 the force, the strain on the body 15 is developed by this force. This train is detected by a strain gage 19 fitted on the body 15. In this case, the higher the forming height of slag 30 is the stronger the force given to the body 15 by the slag 30 becomes. Therefore, in accordance with strength of the strain detected by the strain gage 19, the foaming height of slag 30 can be judged. In this way, as the receiving force to the lance from the slag is measured as the strain of the lance itself, the slag level can be accurately presumed and even in case of carriage type lance, the slag making control to be applicable to the usual operation under high accuracy is executed.
