PURPOSE:To efficiently obtain the title silicon nitride whisker in a short time by baking mixed powder contg. amorphous silicon nitride powder, iron (compd.), and silicon dioxide (contg. material) in a specified weight ratio in the coexistence of a specified amt. of silicon nitride whisker. CONSTITUTION:From 0.05-10pts.wt., expressed in terms of iron, iron and/or an iron compd. (e.g., iron oxide) and 0.05-10pts.wt., expressed in terms of silicon dioxide, silicon dioxide and/or a silicon dioxide-contg. material (e.g., amorphous silica) are mixed with 100pts.wt. amorphous silicon nitride powder. 100pts.wt. of the obtained mixed powder is baked in a nonoxidizing gas atmosphere in the coexistence of 1-50pts.wt. silicon nitride whisker, and the silicon nitride whisker is obtained. The obtained silicon nitride whisker can be appropriately used as the material for reinforcing metals or ceramics, especially as the material for reinforcing a silicon nitride sintered body and a SIALON sintered body.
