PURPOSE:To prevent increase of consumption of a lubricant during driving using a reduced number of cylinders by providing holes at positions inside of the inner envelope of a side seal of a side housing constituting an inoperative cylinder and communicating the holes with an EGR passage through a valve which is openable during driving using a reduced number of cylinders. CONSTITUTION:In order to prevent high load in a working chamber 6 defined between the inner surface of a casing C of each cylinder and the outer peripheral surface of a rotor 5 from being introduced to an output shaft system during driving of a multicylinder rotary engine using a reduced number of cylinders, there are provided holes 40 for introducing EGR gas to spaces 38 defined adjacent to front and rear sides of the rotor 5. Each of the hole 40 is communicated with the space 38 at a position inside of the inner envelope of a side seal of a side housing 1 and an intermediate housing 2 and outside of the outer envelope of an oil seal. The holes 40 are communicated with an EGR passage 41, in which is provided an EGR valve 44.
