PURPOSE:To prevent leakage of light and to improve contrast ratio and shutter characteristic by providing a filter means to suppress the transmission of light of e wavelength corresponding to the max. value of the spectral characteristic in the initial orientation state of a liquid crystal material. CONSTITUTION:Polarizing plates 15, 16 are respectively provided on the outside surfaces of substrates 11, 12 and an optical filter 17 is provided on the upper polarizing plate 15. The optical filter 17 cuts light of <=500nm wavelength. 400-500nm wavelengths of high transmissivity in the initial orientation state in the light leaking parts B... of the liquid crystal cell are thereby cut and, therefore, the leakage of the light in the initial orientation state is prevented. The shutter characteristic is thus improved. |
