PURPOSE:To obtain tungsten carbide powder having high purity and superfine particle size with high production efficiency by irradiating a target material constituted of metal W with laser beam to evaporate the metal W and allowing the evaporated W to react with carbon in the atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:A target material constituted of a green compact or sintered body, or cast product of metal W is laid in a reaction vessel. After evacuating the reaction vessel to <=ca. 10<-5>Torr, a gaseous mixture consisting of inert gas such as Ar or He and gaseous hydrocarbon such as methane, ethane, propane, etc., is introduced into the vessel to adjust the atmosphere in the vessel to ca. 1-760Torr reduced pressure. Under this condition, the target material is irradiated with laser beam to melt locally the target material and to evaporate W. Thus, the evaporated W reacts with carbon in the atmosphere in the gaseous phase forming WC. When the obtd. WC is cooled, superfine WC powder having <=0.1mu particle size is obtd. |
