PURPOSE:To produce a sufficient engine brake effect during running at a high speed and to prevent production of an excessive engine brake effect during running at a low speed, by a method wherein, in an L-range, the speed change ratio of a stepless speed change gear is set so that the number of revolutions of an engine is proportional to a car speed. CONSTITUTION:An oil passage is branched from an oil passage 70 coupled to a driven pulley cylinder chamber 5c, an L-range speed change valve 20 is mounted on this oil passage, and this L-range speed change valve 20 is connected to a switching valve 10 and a manual valve 40. When the manual valve 40 is moved to an L-range in this arrangement, the L-range speed change valve 20 is brought to a pressure regulating state, and an oil pressure, having a specified ratio relation with an oil pressure being exerted on the driven pulley cylinder chamber 5c, is exerted on a drive pulley cylinder chamber 4c. Thus, the number of revolutions of an engine is increased during running at a high speed, resulting in the possibility to produce a sufficient engine brake effect, and the number of revolutions of an engine is not so increased during running at a low speed, resulting in prevention of production of an excessive engine brake effect. |
