The mechanism uses pairs of star wheels (70,74-76) with teeth shaped to form circular openings which advance the shells as they rotate. During vertical travel, the shells pass between curved walls matching the path of rotation of the teeth, so that the shells keep the same radial distance from the axes of rotation. They are driven so that they can rotate in both directions. At junctions between the star wheels are swinging sensing arms (81-84) in pairs each side of the wheels, which guide the shells towards the openings of the next star wheel for both directions of rotation. They are interconnected so that they can be changed over in pairs for a change in direction. The star wheels are driven by a chain drive.
