The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for the formation of rolled-wire and scrap coils. It serves for the collection and distribution of acceptable and scrap turns in the coil collecting station of a wire (rod) rolling mill, the starting and end turns, which are not of acceptable quality, being cropped from the incoming strand of wire by means of a shear installed in the coil collecting station and carried away separately. According to the invention, the object is achieved by the fact that the acceptable turns and the scrap turns are cut off and separated by catching arms arranged in the downender and by a shear and are then fed to the delivery roller table and scrap bin by way of a lifting device and further devices connected to the bottom part of the three-part mandrel and to the scrap mandrels. The apparatus is constructed in such a way that there is a three-part mandrel, the bottom part of which supports and centres the central part of the mandrel, which, in turn, supports and centres the top part of the mandrel, in the downender. Arranged in the downender are catching arms which can be pivoted in four planes and lock the top and central parts of the mandrel, also holding the wire turns.
