The invention relates to a method of producing a moisture impermeable coating on a moisture-permeable substrate, especially a nonwoven material, in which method a thermally softened thermoplastic coating material is applied to the substrate and then, after cooling, forms the moisture-impermeable coating. The thermally softened coating material is in this method first applied to an intermediate support and is then transferred, in a thin layer and in the softened state, from this support to the substrate. The intermediate support used is preferably a continuous strip.
