A short-dwell coater comprises a backing roll (1) whose circumferential surface supports a web (2) to be coated, a doctor blade (3) extending over the entire width of the web for applying a coating mix over the surface of the web backed by the backing roll (1), a trim blade (4) aligned substantially parallel to the doctor blade (3) to form an application zone within a space confined by the trim blade (4), the doctor blade (3) and the backing roll (1), and two end seals (6, 7) mounted over the margins of the web and extending at least over the cross-section of the application zone (18). Each of the end seals (6, 7) is provided with at least one feed channel (11) through which a liquid, such as water, can be introduced between the upper surface of the end seal (6, 7) and the web (2) in order to improve the seal tightness and to reduce the wear of the end seal (6, 7) and the doctor blade (3). <IMAGE> |
