An axially adjustable steering column (1) has a first steering column section (1'), which is supported by means of a bearing block (4) by the vehicle body (5), while the second steering column section actuates the steering gear. In this case, the first steering column section (1') is surrounded by a receiving tube (2), which is connected to a guide sleeve (6). Furthermore, on the guide sleeve (6) there is rotatably mounted an adjusting sleeve (11), on the external thread (11') of which two threaded rings (17 and 17a), lying at a distance (b) from each other, can be screwed by means of their internal thread (17'). These rings are for their part rotatably mounted by means of spherical rolling-contact elements (20) in a bearing race (21). The latter is provided with four leg springs (27), two diametrically opposed leg springs (27) respectively engaging by means of a freely protruding spring end section (27') into in each case a detaining groove (30) of the threaded rings (17 and 17a), as a result of which the latter are angularly turned in opposed circumferential directions (arrow direction e and d). As a result, the thread flanks (17'') of the internal thread (17') of the threaded rings (17 and 17a) are pressed by spring action against the respective thread flanks (11'') of the external thread (11') of the adjusting sleeve (11), so that there is no thread play between the threaded parts and, as a result, the steering wheel (9) is kept free from vibrations (Fig. 2). <IMAGE>
