In a process for the preparation of a pyrrolidinol compound having the general formula I, a hydroxybutyronitrile compound having a general formula II undergoes reductive cyclisation, in an acid containing solution, with hydrogen gas in the presence of a Raney nickel catalyst. <CHEM> R represents a hydrogen atom, a loweralkyl group, a loweralkenyl group, a cycloalkyl group, a cycloalkyl- loweralkyl group, a phenyl-loweralkyl group and a substituted phenyl-loweralkyl group; and R<1>, R<2> and R<3> independently represent a hydrogen atom, a loweralkyl group and a loweralkenyl group. Novel hydroxybutyronitrile compounds and a process for the preparation of a hydroxybutyronitrile compound is also disclosed. |
