Silver halide photographic material is processed in the presence of an antifoggant of the formula (I): <IMAGE> where Q completes a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic, optionally fused, optionally substituted ring, X is a linking group containing an C, N, O or S atom, A is alkylene, alkenylene aralkylene or comprises arylene, B is amino or N-heterocyclic, M is H, alkali metal or NH4, m=1 or 2 and n=0 or 1. Preferred formulae with fused Q rings, and 38 specific compounds are shown; and syntheses. The material has on a support an emulsion of the type producing a surface latent image, e.g. produced by mixing water-soluble Ag and halogen salts in presence of a water-soluble polymer, and then chemically sensitizing. The compound (I) is dissolved in water or organic solvent and incorporated into the material, e.g. black and white or color negative film or X-ray film, in amount of 10<-7> to 10<-2> mol per mol of silver, or in a black and white or color developer or prebath solution in amount of 10<-6> to 10<-1> mol per liter.
