4-Pentenoates of the formula <IMAGE> I where R is alkyl of from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, are prepared by a process in which 5-methylbutyrolactone of the formula <IMAGE> I is reacted with an alcohol of the formula R-O-H III, where R has the above meaning, at from 150 DEG to 400 DEG C. in the presence of an acidic catalyst.
