PURPOSE:To secure good operation of an engine, by a method wherein if a step motor is out of step during the engine operation, adjustment is immediately for the step out. CONSTITUTION:Means 100 for determining a requested step position determines the requested step position corresponding to an operation state of an engine, and controls a step position of a step motor 17 to the requested step position based on the step position stored in a memory means 101 for storing the present step position of the step motor 17. A discrimination means 102 discriminates whether or not the requested step position takes the upper limit position or the lower limit position continuously for a predetermined time or longer (step out). When the discrimination means 102 discriminates the step out, a drive control means 103 drives the step motor 17 to the maximum step position or the minimum step position so that the actual step position of the step motor 17 is made coincident with the position of the step motor 17 stored in the memory means 101.
