ELECTROLYTIC REDUCTION CELL

The electrolytic redn. cell has a filter located in the prod. metal accumulation region over the cell floor and formed of a material which is resistant to attack by the molten prod. metal and the fused electrolyte, is wettable by the metal and is nonwettable by the electrolyte. The filter has one or more throughpassages sized to permit passage of molten metal but restrain passage of molten electrolyte under the max. driving force acting on the electrolyte at the filter. A back pressure of molten metal is maintained at the outlet side of the filter.
